Making the best choice in Fence

Estimated read time 3 min read

The fence is such a common feature in urban backyards that many don’t stop to think about their purpose.  How to choose the right fence for your home?

Maintenance: One of the biggest reasons for why vinyl fences are popular is because they require very little maintenance.  They look just as good as wood fences – wood fences require work in that they have to be stained and sealed on a regular basis.  Wood is more susceptible to weather vagaries, unlike vinyl which holds up well in all kinds of weather.  Vinyl doesn’t get moldy or warp even in humid weather.  Both of them stand up well to power-washing.  Wood fences are susceptible to termite damage according to San Antonio fence company.

Durability: Vinyl fences tend to hold up better over the long term.  Well maintained wood fences last around 20 years – vinyl on the other hand, lasts well over 20.  Wooden fence posts are the first to give out because they are in contact with the ground. Water from sprinklers and rain tend to make wood rot over time.  On the other hand, really cold weather can damage vinyl wood panels.  It expands and contracts based on changing weather conditions and can crack.  On the whole, vinyl holds up better in all kinds of weather compared to wood.

Vinyl fencing offers fewer options.  There are so many stains and paints to choose from as far as wood fences go.

Appearance:  New and well cared for wood fences look great when inspected close up.  They definitely look better than vinyl as they are made of organic materials. When they are not cared for these fences, look very dingy and unattractive.  This can drag property prices down.  High end and well-made vinyl fencing looks just as spectacular but look a bit artificial, close up.  Wood and vinyl fences are both available in a variety of options – picket fences, basket weave, post and rail, crises crossing slats and vertical boards to name a few.  Vinyl fencing offers fewer options.  There are so many stains and paints to choose from as far as wood fences go.

Cost: All in all, wood fencing is really inexpensive compared to vinyl.  There is so much choice in wood as well – cedar, yellow pine, redwood, Douglas fir etc.  Choose the right stain and a fence can look really good.  Though vinyl fencing is more expensive to begin with it is cheaper in the long run as the only maintenance that it needs is a good washing.

Assembly: Vinyl fencing is made of sturdy PVC plastic resin and is available in panels that are already put together for easy installation. Another available choice is snap-together pieces. High end vinyl fencing companies use aluminum or steel posts to anchor the entire structure.  In the case of wood fencing, everything is organic and the chance of rotting is pretty high.
